Grant has a BA from Furman University; a MA from North Carolina State University; and was selected for and completed a graduate program at the Center for the Advancement of Social Entrepreneurship at Duke's Fuqua School of Business. Before graduate school, Grant lived and worked in Uganda, East Africa, helping launch and manage a startup nonprofit that grew into Akola, a social enterprise that employs and empowers women entrepreneurs.
Why have you decided to serve as a Torchbearer for the JLB?
Initially, to support my good friend, Bruce Lanier. After more reflection, I have seen the consequences and impact of domestic violence through a close family member. It's been a lifelong recovery process for that family member, and her recovery would not have been possible without the right resources and support system.
Also, I spent 10-years working in the nonprofit field so it can be hard not to look at other nonprofits with a critical eye, questioning their effectiveness. As I've gained more understanding about One Place, it is clear that their holistic approach and well-coordinated services must grow and expand to reach more people that need them. It is an honor to support the organization as they invest in their own building / location so that they are well-positioned for long-term success. The new building really will be a light during a very dark time in people's lives.
What/who inspires you to be a Light in our community?
Anyone who quietly but deliberately does the real groundwork needed in our community. Several people come to mind but the first is Katie Davis at Jones Valley Teaching Farm.
