Why have you decided to serve as a Torchbearer for the JLB?
I decided to become a torchbearer because I have always had a special place in my heart for the voiceless- for those who, by no fault of their own, are in situations where they have no control. From women in abusive relationships, to foster children we have had in our home, (including our youngest son who we adopted out of a horrible situation), to children with special needs and no resources to get them the care they truly need- we have a responsibility as God's children to do what we can to care for other members in our community. Being a torchbearer is a very tangible way to act to help victims of domestic abuse and give them a chance to start again with support and resources that they might not have had before.

What/who inspires you to be a Light in our community?
I believe that charity starts at home, and seeing the droves of local charities here in Birmingham, all run and sustained by volunteers, is truly inspiring. Our community has so many needs. We have financial needs, educational needs, hunger needs, housing needs, and of course, a need to reach out directly to those who are in immediate, possibly life-saving need. There are always people willing to put themselves aside and do something for someone in need, often to the detriment of their own perceived well-being. It is those people who inspire me, and I wish that I could be more like them in every part of my life. It is a willingness and an attitude to which I will continue to aspire.
